Neighborhood Description
Founded in 1751 as a Maryland tobacco port, Georgetown is actually older than its home city of Washington DC. The quaint neighborhood is hard to access from the city's metro rails, adding to the sense of exclusivity and entitlement to the region and helping lay claim to the district's most prestigious constituents. Cobblestone and trolley tracks enhance the suburban atmosphere. Georgetown's adaptability may be its most desirable quality. It offers some of the finest shopping within DC, particularly its fashionable boutiques on M St. and Wisconsin Avenue. Georgetown then transforms itself into a vibrant college scene as serving one of the nation's top academic institutions of Georgetown University. Finally, the neighborhood maintains its traditional look by being protected by a 1950 Congressional law declaring it a historical district that would require any and all renovations to be passed by a board of architects.
