Neighborhood Description
As voted in 1997, Takoma Park officially became a city of Montgomery County and is no longer split with Prince George’s County. Takoma Park straddles the DC-Maryland border and falls into the distict’s Takoma neighborhood, Silver Springs in Maryland, and Carole Highlands neighborhood of Prince George’s County. The city of Takoma Park is a political entity of its own however, and in fact is known as an extremely liberal area. The so-called “Berkeley of the East,” voted to be a nuclear free zone in 1983 and prohibits any city monies from being spent or invested in entities that create nuclear components.
