Neighborhood Description
Very similar to the suburbs of southern Maryland and Arlington, Alexandria has prospered due to its proximity and ease of transportation to DC. It is indeed a wealthy suburb; a 2005 property assessment report indicated that 40% of all Alexandrian homes and condos were in the top bracket, worth $556,000 or more. Old Town serves as the historic downtown, main Alexandrian tourist attraction, and popular nightlife area for the city. The city streets are laid in a grid pattern as they were originally implemented by the Fairfax County surveyor's office over 200 years ago by a 17-year old novice, George Washington.
