Neighborhood Description
Columbia Heights
Once a farmland suburb of the Federal City, Columbia Heights is now near the center of the District’s revitalization efforts. Hundreds of millions of dollars were invested in creating the Columbia Heights metro stop which opened in 1999. New projects include the 546,000 square foot shopping center, DC USA, anchored by the likes of Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Staples which will open in 2008. The Dance Institute of Washington built state of the art facilities within Columbia Heights. The GALA Hispanic Theatre and Giant Foods both moved into Tivoli Square in 2005 as Columbia Heights Tivoli Theatre became the first permanent home of the GALA.
The gentrification process of Columbia Heights is not being lost on real estate developers. View 14, Park Triangle, Lofts of Columbia Park, and Kenyon Square are just a few of the major construction of condominiums and apartment homes being built. A large percentage of these projects are mixed-use developments combining retail space on ground level with apartment homes and condos above. The new construction adds to Columbia Height’s pattern of non-consistency. The area displays a true range of living standards with luxury condos being matched with shell homes.
