Neighborhood Description
Once known as "Little Rome,” this neighborhood is home to the largest gathering of Catholic institutions outside of Rome itself. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the US's largest Catholic church and Catholic University is the only US school under direct papal patronage.
Beyond this Catholic heritage the area has also been home to numerous note-worthy African-Americans, including but not limited to Pearl Bailey, Ralph Bunch, Edward Brooke, and Robert Weaver. The area maintains the same name as its metro-stop, and it is a residential neighborhood of northeastern DC. The community combines a small office population with several locally owned restaurants.
