2019 weather predictions are calling for a snowier and later than usual winter this year. To ensure plenty of worry free and cozy nights by the fireplace, we recommend reading and following our tips on getting prepared for higher levels of snow coming our way!
Clear Your Sidewalk
Did you know that it is DC law to shovel your sidewalk within 8 hours of the end of a snow fall? If you are new to DC and are not aware, snow that does not get shoveled has the potential to melt and refreeze. This causes icy, slippery and dangerous sidewalks. If you don’t have one, invest in a proper snow shovel or snow blower.
Keep Your Heat Running at a Base Temp
Keeping your heating system on a base temperature throughout the day, will ensure that your HVAC system will not work as hard to warm the room to a higher temperature when needed. This keeps wear and tear on the system to a minimum, and minimizes maintenance costs in the long run.
Wrap Your Pipes & Spigots
We cannot stress enough how important it is to wrap your outside pipes and spigots. When the water inside the pipes freezes, it expands and breaks even the toughest of metals. A burst pipe not only causes a huge mess – but can cost upwards of $2,000. Wrapping your pipes will prevent the water inside the pipes from freezing, and protect your home altogether.
Open Cabinets
To keep warm air circulating onto your pipes, we recommend opening your bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors.
Create a “Mud Area” in Your Home
Melted snow is not only messy, but could potentially cause dangerous slips and falls. Designate a spot in the front of your home to keep all of your foot wear and wet items, like umbrellas, away from the rest of the home.
Be Prepared for Power Outages
It’s always smart to be prepared for power outages. In the case of severe snow storms, you definitely want to have some extra warmth available. Be sure to stock up on non perishable foods, flashlights, emergency blankets and even hand/foot warmers. Even if it’s not probable, it’s better to be safe and prepared!
After ensuring that you have prepared your home and yourself for a snowy winter, we highly encourage as many cozy evenings as possible!
