The Best Breweries in Northern VA: Make Some Tasting Room 1

2 Silos Brewing Co.

One of the very first breweries in Virginia that should be on your list is the 2 Silos Brewing Co. Located in Prince William County, this brewing company is on the campus of Farm Brew LIVE at Innovation Park.

2 Silos is a destination brewery where you can meet up with friends and family, enjoy some premier beer and good food too.

They have regular visits from taco food trucks and offer guests winter igloos. Their flagship beers include:

  • Mosaic Goat, a double IPA
  • Virginia Creme Ale, a smooth, medium-bodied golden ale
  • Citralicious, an American India pale ale
  • Manassas Station, a  pale yellow American Lager

The brewery also has regularly featured limited-release beers for your trying.

Aslin Beer Company

Aslin Beer Company was founded in 2015, by two friends who both married daughters from the Aslin family. Located first in Herndon, they’ve since expanded with a taproom in Alexandria too.

While their goal was originally to make interesting brews, through being a beer company, they’ve come to realize their goal is also about bringing the community together.

As brewers, they are dedicated to the craft of brewing interesting, quality, unique beers.

Their Tasting Room is family-friendly until 7 pm. After 7 pm, “adult swim” is in effect and guests must be over 21 to enter.

The Herndon location allows outdoor food to be brought in and features the Everyday Bun’d Up food truck on location.

The Alexandria location has an on-site kitchen serving pizza, burgers, salads, and sandwiches made with house-made bread.

Bear Chase Brewing Company

If you want to enjoy your craft beer with a view, then Bear Chase Brewing Company should be on your visit list. Sit outside with a good beer and take in the panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Want to sit inside? The brewery taproom was built to take in the mountain views too.

Bear Chase features a “Brew Barn” with multiple brewing systems. Of course, they’re dog friendly too. Bring your pooch to the taproom for taste testing, sit around their wood fire pits, and enjoy a quality brew.

They have on-site food and live music on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

If you find a brew you love, you can even get some of their select brews to go.

Bear Chase is even in the farming business, growing their own hops and with plans to plant orchards in the near future. They continue to use fresh mountain water in their brewing process.

Old Bust Head Brewing

Old Bust Head is known for its ales and award-winning lagers and their unique location. Visit them at the farm called “Vint Hill”. This location spent a half-century as a top-secret military listening post.

Located in the rolling hills of Fauquier County, Virginia, they offer brewery tours Wednesday through Sunday.

They feature a regular rotation of food trucks visiting the site. Want to bring kids? In this case, you’ll know they will learn something valuable.

Old Bust Head Brewing is committed to teaching kids about:

  • Saving energy
  • Conserving resources
  • Maximizing sustainability in the area

They are also committed to practicing what they preach. 40% of the energy needed for their production facility is generated from on-site solar power. They also have 18 500’ deep geothermal wells that are used to efficiently heat and cool the taproom and offices.

Vanish Brewing

Located in Lucketts, Virginia, Vanish Brewing is a 63-acre, family-owned farm-brewery that is popular far and wide for beer and scenery.

Vanish offers scenic outdoor spaces and a taproom to enjoy their line-up of 20 different on-tap brews. They also have space for small and larger private events.

Dogs are welcome in their Dogtown room, pavilion, and open field area. They must be on a leash.

Do you have someone in your group who isn’t a fan of beer? Vanish Brewing also serves wine, cider, freshly made sangria, and their own wine slushies.

Old Ox Brewery

Located in Loudoun County on, you guessed it, Old Ox Road. Old Ox Road was once used to connect the many farm products from Loudoun County to the markets in Fairfax County.

Old Ox Brewery has its own tasting room. But they also produce in larger quantities and sell commercially. You could find your favorite Old Ox brew in bars and restaurants in Northern Virginia, the District of Columbia, and Florida too.

Old Ox features a 30-barrel brewhouse. This is a busy brewhouse with each batch they create producing 930 gallons of beer. 930 gallons of beer makes 9,920 12-oz. cans of beer or around 413 cases.

Understanding the Ledger

Your portal includes a ledger with all transactions. The ledger is populated with data in real-time as transactions flow through our accounting software. Much of this information is also available in the Reports area, as well as the Statements in your Documents library, but the ledger is the most comprehensive resource for diving into the details.

Please scroll through the sections below to get a better understanding of how to interpret the ledger.

By default, transactions are sorted chronologically:

Owner Ledger Dates
  • The date reflected in the lefthand column is the actual transaction date, not the “bill date”. This is the date the transaction was actually processed.

If you have multiple properties with Nomadic, you'll see the address for each transaction in the "Location" column:

Ledger Property Column
  • You can filter the ledger to look at just one property, all properties, or specific sets of properties.
  • If you only have one property with us, you’ll just see the ledger for that property.

The Description column displays the transaction type:

Owner Ledger Description Column
  • BILL: this is an expense transaction, such as for repair costs or management fees.
  • CHARGE: this is a transaction  billed to the tenant, most typically a rent payment.
  • NACHA EXPORT: this is a credit we processed to your distribution account. This type of transaction is how you get paid!

The Amount column shows the dollar value of each transaction:

Owner Ledger Amount Column
  • Positive Amounts: if an amount is positive, it reflects a transaction that is payable to you. Typically, this will be a rent payment that we collected from your tenants. On occasion, a positive number could also signify a journal entry or credit adjustment.
  • Negative Amounts:  if an amount is negative, this is a transaction that is either payable to Nomadic or is an amount that has already been paid to you. Typically this will be for repair costs or management/leasing fees. Owner draws (net distributions into your checking/savings account) also reflect as negative amounts, since they have already been paid to you.

The Account Balance column shows a sum of positive/negative transactions at a given point in time:

Owner Ledger Account Balance Column
  • Account Balance should always equal zero after a net distribution has been processed. When the balance is zero, this means that all expenses have been paid and you’ve received the remainder as net operating income, leaving a balance of zero (meaning: no one is due any money, as all funds have been distributed appropriately).

How do net distributions work?

Net distributions keep your accounting clean and simple. Each month we’ll collect rent from the tenants, deduct any repair expenses for the previous month and any management/leasing fees for the current month, and credit the remaining net operating income to your account.

Net Distribution

You’ll receive a statement via email each time a net distribution is processed, and can view all transaction details in your Propertyware owner portal.
